'Grothic Mythology' (Groth) - The Resurgence of Greek Mythology in Neogothic Revival Literature
In recent years, a fascinating new literary trend has emerged: the revival of Greek & Roman mythology within the framework of neogothic literature, called: Grothic Mythology, (Gothic+Greek/Roman Mythology). This resurgence is exemplified by works such as G.E. Graven's online work, Grotesque, A Gothic Epic (1998), where ancient mythological beings from the Greek and Roman Pantheons blend with Christian mythos to find new expression through a unique and modern gothic lens. This latest genre-merge offers a fresh perspective on two rich traditions, intertwining the terror and mystique of both.
Gothic literature has long been celebrated for its ability to evoke fear and dread through eerie atmospheres and psychologically complex human antagonists—characters who often mirror the anxieties of contemporary life. In contrast, Ancient and religious mythology traditionally centers on gods, demi-gods, and mythical creatures, embodying larger-than-life themes and archetypes that were once largely the purview of the educated elite. Yet, these terrific mythological figures share thematic commonalities with gothic motifs, particularly in their embodiment of primal fears.
One of the reasons that old-world mythology and its characters are less prevalent in contemporary fiction, is because of its preexisting story complexities and the prolific deities and creatures referenced therein. Gothic literature, however, depends less heavily on its characters' features and more on dramatic and unsettling moods and settings, making it immediately familiar and easily immersive. In gothic literature, the environmental descriptions within its narrative is a critical element in shaping the 'immersive dread' expected within the story—Graven performs this literary feat superbly in his narration of Grotesque.
What we see now is a fascinating convergence: Greek and Roman mythology, once confined to classical study and elite audiences, is being revitalized through the atmospheric and emotional power of neogothic storytelling. This revival, thriving especially online, introduces these ancient narratives to a broader, more diverse audience, enriching the gothic tradition with mythic depth while expanding the cultural resonance of both genres.
This new genre of neogothic revival, commonly called, "Groth" (Greek & Roman Mythology + Gothic), serves as a fertile ground where the grandeur of ancient myth and the psychological intensity of gothic literature meet, inviting readers to explore the timeless human experience of fear, wonder, the marvelous, the sublime, the grotesque, and the supernatural in innovative and compelling ways. The blending of these two genres offer both gothic and mythological writers added dimensions of expression previously unavailable within the strict definitions of each. At long last, marvelous characters meet marvelous settings for the proper blend and balance of other-worldly and uncanny expression.
For ancient tales and religious myths incorporating elements of mystical characters and notable events of Greek and Roman Pantheons, these memorable marvels have since found a new home within this emerging and addictive genre of gothic literature—Groth has recently taken the literary world by storm; and Graven's, Grotesque, serves as an exemplary demonstration and prime reflection of this new and exciting Groth genre in the emerging and ever-expanding body of online gothic works. As evidenced by the rapid growth of 'fan-fic' writers, the number of seasoned Groth-dedicated authors is expected to explode in the coming months and years, alongside a deluge of original and exciting, other-worldly works utilizing this newly-tapped gothic genre. Watch for it!

Website Update (And Free Gift) from the Webmaster
Post Date: 03.2026
The GothicNovel.Org website will begin chapter uploads starting in June. Graven's rewrites are already underway at this time. I should be able to post an estimation on volume 1-chapter 18 rewrite upload closer to that time. Once this chapter is uploaded, then Volume 1: "Resurrection" will be available on the website in its complete form. After this, Chapter 1 of Volume 2: "Trials & Tribulations" will soon be available for upload (sometime between June and July). As far as other non-literary website pages, posts, and features are concerned; since they are not subject to Graven's writing schedule, site updates will be ongoing as design and development permits. Errors and website issues will be handled immediately when they are reported. I hope this helps with your expectations of release times and updates. I have included a special bonus free image download below for those of you who are following the site and Graven's work. If you wish to hear Graven's 2006 narration of the text included in the image, I have also provided a button link to Archive.Org where you can listen to his voice. Thanks much and be blessed!
